Day Outing–Rifle Shooting by Ben Brown

Last weekend Troop 26 met as usual at Big 5 at 7:00. Although instead of going hiking we drove up the mountains to Rancho Alegre for some rifle shooting. We walked up the trail to the shooting range on a cool bright morning. Our range master Bullfrog explained the basics of safe gun handling, and the range rules. After that, we split into two groups. One of the groups began shooting at Bullfrogs command. The other group began working on lashings and building tripods. The group not shooting chose a camp gadget to work on to practice for Camporee.

We chose a table for our camp gadget, built with small logs of wood, ropes, and stakes. While building and shooting we had a short lunch break. We shot and built the table for a solid 4 hours. When we had our fill of shooting, bullfrog took a couple of the scout to show them how to clean and take apart the guns. The scouts not learning gun cleaning packed away our backpacks and building gear. All in all a very nice excursion that wasn’t a hike.
