Younger Scout Sierra Trek 2015

The John Muir Wilderness encompasses 581,153 acres within the Sierra and Inyo National Forests. It extends almost 100 miles along the crest of the Sierra Nevada in Central California. Elevations range from 5,000 to 14,505 feet on Mt. Whitney on the south to Happy Isles in Yosemite Valley on the north.

The Dusy Basin and their granite and green meadows are nestled in the heart of the John Muir Wilderness in the Kings Canyon National Park, surrounded by Mt. Agassiz (13,893), Mt. Winchell (13,768), Thunderbolt (14,003), Mt. Sill (14,162) and, mightiest of all, North Palisade (14,242) to the east. Isosceles Peak (12,320), Columbine Peak (12,662), Giraud Peak (12,585) are to the south. White granite Langille Peak (12,018) and The Citadel (11,738) are to the west of the LeConte Canyon and Mt. Goode (13,085) is to the north. There are several picturesque clear water lakes and streams and grass covered benches in the Dusy Basin.

There are two cols (mountain passes) used by backpackers traveling between Dusy and Palisade Basins: Knapsack Pass and Thunderbolt Pass. Most used is Knapsack Pass (11,673), the saddle immediately south of Columbine Peak. The Palisade Basin, dotted with the Barrett Lakes, has the foreboding wall of the Palisades behind.

North Palisade, elevation 14,242 feet, crown of the Palisade group, is an austere diorite monolith. Guarded on its northeast side by a large ice field and on its southwest flank by huge, sheer walls, North Palisade is the spectacular culmination of the incredible ridge known as the Palisades. As a peak, North Pal (as it is commonly known) is one of the most sought-after summits in all California.

One of the earliest mountaineers to visit the region was Frank Dusy, for whom Dusy Basin is named. In 1877, Dusy explored the headwaters of the Kings River.
