DESCRIPTION:Hi T26 Scouts and Scouters\,\nPlease plan on a beautiful backpacking weekend trip from NIRA trailhead (near Figueroa Mtn) to Manzana Narrows Camp.  The Narrows is a beautiful spot where there is a lot of water and there is shade provided by the steep walls of the gorge.  We’ll get an early start each day\, in case the forecast is warm.\nThis outing is appropriate for all Scouts in our troop.  Please remember\, we all need to participate regularly in troop weekend backpacking and hikes so that we will be prepared for the more challenging trips ahead.\nWE WILL DO ORIENTEERING AND NAVIGATIONS SIGNOFFS (2nd Class Item 3 and 1st Class Item 4) ON THIS TRIP.\nCook groups will be by patrol and each patrol will plan and buy its own food. DESCRIPTION:Hi Scouts\,\nThanks to everyone who came to the Troop Guide meeting last Tuesday.  It was a great start. After further reviewing timing I want to push forward on the fitness requirements.\nSPECIAL NOTE – Anyone needing First Class requirement\, 4a (Orienteering) should definitely consider the Manzano Narrows Backpacking trip on 9/9. Mr. Schley will be setting up an Orienteering Course and can sign this off.  This is a very difficult requirement to get signed off.\nNow back to fitness.\nIf you have completed the Tenderfoot requirements 6a\, 6b\, and 6c\, start work on second class requirement 7a\,\n“After completing Tenderfoot requirement 6c\, be physically active at least 30 minutes each day for five days a week for four weeks. Keep track of your activities.”\nOnce you start\, don’t stop for 8 weeks and you will get your First Class requirements done too.\nIf you have completed requirements 7a and 7b for Second Class\, work on requirements 8a for First Class.\n‘After completing Second Class requirement 7a\, be physically active at least 30 minutes each day for five days a week for four weeks. Keep track of your activities.”\nSchool PE counts.\nRemember it is up to you to do these on your own time and if you do not show initiative\, we cannot help you advance. SUMMARY:Gaviota Wind Caves and Overlook (Patton)
DESCRIPTION:Troop 26 is doing a day hike to the Wind Caves on Saturday August 19th!  We will be meeting at the Big 5 at 8 am and then heading out to Gaviota and the trail head.  The weather has been beautiful and this hike has great views of the ocean and outer islands.  We will ascend to the wind caves which are a very cool natural rock formation.  After a brief stop\, we will continue to a point overlooking the Gaviota freeway and tunnel.  We will then return on the same path to the cars.  The ~4.5 mile round trip path is a mix of paved and dirt trails.  There are some steep bits so be ready for that.\nBring 10 essentials\, a hat\, water\, and a snack to eat. Approx one week of hiking in the beautiful Sierra\, 30 or so miles\, with some possible day hikes on layover days in Golden Trout Wilderness.  The Sierra Treks are the highlight of most of our scouts scouting careers – and even the ‘short’ ones are a significant achievement!    We leave Santa Barbara Monday Aug 7’th\, and will camp together with the longer trek group at Cottonwood car camp site\, and will head into the Wilderness on Tuesday.\nParticipation fee is .  This will cover estimated gas expense plus a modest allowance for a meal on the 13th and incidentals.  Adults are giving a week of their time\,  10 hours of driving\, and lots of prep work\, so no fee for adults. SUMMARY:Training Trek Shakedown
DESCRIPTION:We will be shaking down the scouts’ hiking techniques and their packs.  This is especially important for scouts on the Training Sierra Trek.  Scouts should be dressed and backpacks packed exactly as they will be for their Sierra trek.  This hike will be for 2 miles in mostly shaded areas and include a couple creek crossings and short uphills to simulate Sierra conditions.  there will be short breaks to identify plants for First Class requirement 5a.  At the end we will circle up and discuss what went right and what went wrong.
