SUMMARY:Backpacking - longer Sierra Trek prep (Weakliem)
DESCRIPTION:Note – two overnight backpacking trips this weekend\, a longer (this one)  and ().  Sign up for only one!\nSince all of our backpacking trips have been foiled this year\, this is going to be our only overnight preparation for the Sierra Trek!  This particular one is intended for those hoping to go on the longer Sierra Trek (the final roster is not set…).   We’ll be meeting Big 5 at 7am Saturday and doing a hike over Cold Springs trail to Cottam camp\, about 8 miles\, with several thousand feet of climbing/descending.  For ST folks\, in addition to your usual backpacking equipment\, use a bear can (to get used to how to pack with it).   Sack lunch for Saturday\, and cooking is by patrols.   If we can get a couple of parents to volunteer to drop us off\, and pick us up at the trailhead\, we’d appreciate it\, as I’m not sure if we can park overnight there.\nWant more info? DESCRIPTION:THE INVITEES HAVE BEEN UPDATED TODAY TO INCLUDE OUR NEWEST SCOUTS.  IF YOU WANT TO GO\, PLEASE CONTACT MR. PATTON BEFORE TUESDAY.\nDo you want the chance to see condors in their natural habitat?  Are you eager to visit the most underrated park in California (according to Outside Magazine)?  Then this trip to Pinnacles National Park is for you.  We are planning on meeting at Big 5 on Saturday\, May 13th at 6:00 with a 6:15 departure so we can get up to Pinnacles early in the day.  From there\, we shall take a quick\, short hike on the Moses Spring Trail to enjoy some snacks by the reservoir there.  After replenishing ourselves and stretching our legs\, we shall embark on one of my favorite hikes in the state\, the High Peaks Trail.  We’ll eat lunch on the trail and from there make our way back to our vehicles.  Depending on time\, we can learn more about the flora and fauna at the Nature Center (if open)\, and then make our way to our campsites\, located about 15-20 minutes outside the park at Bar SZ Ranch.  After setting up camp\, eating a hearty dinner and getting a good night’s sleep\, we’ll wake up\, eat breakfast\, pack up camp and head back to the park on Sunday morning.  Once there\, we can make our way on the Balconies Cave Trail\, enjoying the amazing sights offered by a series of caves and tunnels carved by water\, providing us with great views of the park.  After that\, we’ll have some lunch and then make our way back home\, hopefully getting back to Santa Barbara by 4/4:30 p.m.\nIf that sounds like a great way to spend a weekend\, then please sign up. DESCRIPTION:Scouts and Scouters\,\nCamporee is back — thanks in large part to the efforts of a District volunteer\, Mr. Weakliem!  It will be on the Rancho Alegre side this year.  Arrive at 5:30pm Friday to set up camp.  Scouts will tent-camp by patrols and compete in events.  Dinners are provided\, patrols cook breakfasts\, and bring a no-cook lunch for Saturday. Competition and OA election results will be announced Saturday night at the campfire. DESCRIPTION:The evening hike to a sack dinner (no cooking!) atop Inspiration Point is a Troop tradition!  Arrive at Jesusita Trailhead (near Cater Water Treatment Facility) with ten essentials and a sack dinner.  Put new batteries in your headlamp (or bring spares)\, as we will be hiking back in the dark.  This is designed to be a follow-on activity to the afternoon bridge and gate building exercise\, but may be done separately. SUMMARY:Carrizo Plain Backpacking (Scholl & Youngdahl)
DESCRIPTION:Sign up now!\nFollowing the closure of most backpacking venues normally available to us\, Mr. Scholl has arranged our troop’s first backpacking expedition in the Carrizo Plain National Monument (southeast of Santa Maria).  More information:\nEveryone is ready for some backpack experience. This trip will be adventurous: it will include hiking in a remote area mostly on dirt roads not in use at this time\, cross-country route finding\, compass\, GPS\, and map use\, leave no trace camping\, cooking as patrols\, and spring finding and developing. You will be putting many scouting skills you have learned into practice. We will leave on March 29 from Big 5 at 6:30 AM SHARP. Scouts and adults should have a good breakfast at home and bring snacks for the first day of hiking. All food from here will be by patrols. Lunch the first day will be on the trail and dinner at camp after hiking a backcountry dirt road about 5 miles and possibly visiting an old homestead site if time permits. The second day we will hike about 4 miles including about 2 miles of cross-country route finding on an old homestead track. On the third day we will hike about 5 miles on a backcountry dirt road\, explore an old site and end at our cars. If time permits\, we can we will explore some sites on Carrizo Plain and then camp another night at an established campground if all scouts are able to budget that time and if a campsite is available-to be determined based on the response from the BLM. We will return on March 31 in the evening (time TBD) with dinner out en route or on April 1 with lunch out en route. TBD depending on schedule.\nThe following is the trip plan filed with the BLM. Map files are attached..\nAdult leader in charge: ASM Richard Scholl\, cell phone 8056838874\nSecond in charge:  ASM Mike Youngdahl\, 8054487168\nEmergency home contact: Michael Schley\, cell phone 8056899818 or Paul Weakliem\, cell phone 8053155184\nGeneral notes: There will be 3-4 adult leaders and 8-12 boys\, aged 12 to 17. All travel and camping will be on previously disturbed surfaces and follow Leave No Trace principles. Human waste will be buried in 6-12″ deep and at least 200′ from water courses and springs. All camping will be within designated BLM Open Camping area. Adult leader has extensive experience in cross-country travel in remote wilderness and familiarity with the specific trek area in Carrizo Plain. Adult leader has Wilderness First Aid training and CPR training. The group will carry detailed area topo maps\, GPS\, and compasses. Cooking will be done with backpacking stoves. Adult leader has a campfire permit and will comply with all permit conditions. If wood is available\, evening campfires will be used and ashes dispersed or buried. All trash will be carried out.\nThe trek will commence from the intersection of the backcountry Lawson Spring Road and Soda Lake Rd (point marked “begin trek” on map) at approximately 10am on March 29. 2-3 autos will be parked slightly off soda Lake Rd on Lawson Springs Rd. and 1-2 autos ferried to the intersection of Soda Springs Rd to the Wells Ranch ruins. The troop will hike Lawson Spring Rd to the point marked “start cross country”\, camp there and possibly investigate Lawson Spring. On March 30 the troop will hike the homesteader track from there to the point marked “end cross country” and continue on the existing backcountry road to near the road branching to Wells Spring and camp there. On March 31 the troop will continue hiking on the backcountry road past the Wells Ranch ruins to the point marked “end trek” on Soda Lake Rd and retrieve the other ferried autos.
