2014 San Francisco to Santa Barbara Bike Trek
June 8 – June 14
Ride with your friends at Troop 26 this summer on the bike trip of a life time starting at the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge and ending at Refugio State Beach.
Ten scouts and 5 adult leaders from Troop 26 completed this same trek in 2005 and everyone had a fantastic time.
We will be riding approximately 60 miles per day and scouts will be broken up into ability levels so that everyone rides at their own pace. We will be camping nightly at State Parks as we pedal down Highway 1, our group will be followed by a sag wagon carrying our camping gear and food, and each rider will carry only a day pack or pannier.
Each scout must have a dependable street bike with at least 24 inch wheels and there is no need for any expensive gear. The cost for the trip is expected to be about $300 depending on if we have to rent a truck or trailer.
An adult driver will be needed for the sag wagon to follow the riders during the day and deliver our supplies to our evening campsites.
There is space on this trip for a maximum of 24 participants, sign ups start on Tuesday, January 7, 2014. A $50 deposit is required no later than February 1, 2014. There are 5 scheduled training rides for this trip with each rider required to complete at least 4 rides and encouraged to make all 5:
- Ride #1 – February 8
- Ride #2 – March 15
- Ride #3 – April 19
- Ride #4 – May 10
- Ride #5 – May 24
In addition, participants are encouraged to do as much riding on their own time as possible to prepare for the trek. Assistant Scoutmaster Baird is the adult leader for this trip and can be reached at 895-9771 for any questions or concerns.
This is truly a trip of a lifetime and our 2005 group was a mix of older and younger scouts who all had a great time!
Troop 26 will embark on a 350+ mile bicycling trip this June. The trip will begin at the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge and end at Refugio State Beach.
We will mostly follow Highway 1, and will take us through Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur and Morro Bay among other cities.
The highlight of the trip may well be the isolated coastline between Carmel and San Simeon. This section is a beautiful but demanding road with minimal shoulders traversing open grasslands and timbered slopes.
We will spend the most time traveling through this area to maximize safety, as well as the being able to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The trip will end at Refugio, where their families and a barbecue dinner will greet the riders.
