Cold Weather Menu Guidelines

Cold-Weather Menu Guidelines

Breakfast: Quick and simple breakfasts speed up cold, early morning departures. The dry ingredients can be mixed at home and sealed in plastic bags. Try hot oatmeal mixed with granola and whole milk, and hot drinks. Add dried fruit or cinnamon and nutmeg to the mush. Accompany it with a hot drink.

Lunch: Start with high-energy snack foods. (chocolate bar, snack bar) Then dig into dried fruit, meats, cheese, and sugary foods. (Cookies, granola bars, salami, jerky, cheese, pepperoni, gorp).
Move on to a “main course.” (Bagels with cream cheese, crackers with cheese)

Dinner: Go for one-pot simplicity. Select from the usual starch staples or try tortillas or dumplings. At home, mix everything – sauces, dried vegetables, seasonings in plastic bag. Hot drink and instant soups before dinner keep up fluids and body heat.

The Goodie Bag: Dip into this reserve if you think a meal needs something more. Here’s where you keep cheese, spices and salt, sweeteners, coffee, tea, soups, cocoa, powdered milk, and any other perishables.
