On Sat. December 17, we are doing a classic hike (of sorts) in the nearby front country of Los Padres National Forest – the rock maze known as The Playground. The rock formations here are a popular destination for Santa Barbara adventurers who like to amble among the numerous rocky corridors to be found here. The trailhead is found off of West Camino Cielo.
The hike consists of a 20-30 minute walk down a brush corridor of a path until you reach a rock formation known as The Guardian. Once you get to the other side of it, a beautiful vista of Santa Barbara, the Pacific, and the Channel Islands comes into view. From there, scouts wander and explore the rocks in the general vicinity of The Guardian for a while. If you have a friend who wants to see what scouting is about, this is a good trip to bring them on. In fact, we hope to have some Cub Scouts join us for the fun.
