IMPORTANT REMINDER TO TROOP 26 SCOUTS AND PARENTS
TROOP 26 SERVICE PROJECT THIS COMING SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12
ST. MARK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH PRE-SCHOOL
10:00 AM UNTIL COMPLETION
Please Note:
This location is the site of our weekly Troop 26 meetings and Courts of Honor. The church leadership has generously allowed our troop to meet there for the past several years free of charge, and has just extended our ability to use the location for at least the next three years on similar terms. They have, however, asked the troop to conduct this service project to help protect their pre-school facilities in advance of heavy rain storms this winter which frequently led to flooding in the classrooms, offices, and grounds of the school.
Description of the Service Project:
(1) Scouts will be working in teams within their respective Troop Patrols under the leadership of their Patrol Leaders and Senior Patrol Leader. Several Assistant Scoutmasters will also be present and overseeing the project under the overall direction of ASM Parker, our ASM for Service Projects.
(2) The Scouts and Adult Leaders will first remove the old sandbags full of years-old unusable sand and their decaying and ripped sandbags holding that sand and place them elsewhere on the property for later removal.
(3) Clean sand will have been delivered to the church property later this week for our Scouts and any dads who would like to help. It is to be noted that a three-quarter filled sandbag bag weighs about 40+ pounds and a dads extra strength to load wheelbarrows to move those new bags to their desired locations at the pre-school buildings would be welcomed. Also, we could use 5 6 wheelbarrows to move both the old and new sandbags. If you have a wheelbarrow we could use for the day, please bring it to the site, whether or not you can stay to help.
(4) Scout uniforms are not required, and each Scout should wear clothing that can be thoroughly washed after the project is completed.
(5) Each participant Scouts and dads will be required to bring and wear at least two industrial or medical-style facemasks capable of filtering out dust and any other microscopic materials that could still reside in the old sand, and serve as an additional protective device for any potential dust in the new sand which will have been cleaned in advance of delivery by the supplier.
(6) Similarly, Scouts and dads should bring inexpensive goggles or similarly inexpensive plastic safety glasses to protect against dust flying about while the new sandbags are being loaded with sand and moved to their placement locations.
(7) Each Scout and dad should bring a long-handled shovel to pick up the sand from the bulk supply and load it into the sandbags.
(8) Work gloves are recommended to prevent minor abrasions, scrapes, or blisters to the hands while using shovels to load the new sand into the new bags.
(9) Four or five yard-style push brooms are needed for the day to clean up any residual sand left on the church parking lots where it will have been delivered and the new sandbags filled.
(10) Every Scout and dad should bring at least one or two bottles of drinking water as Saturday is predicted to be warm. Water will be available to refill those bottles at the church worksite.
(11) Each Patrol Leader should ensure that at least one basic first aid kit is available for their patrol in the event of any abrasions or blisters are encountered by their patrol members.
(12) Each Scout should also bring their own sack lunch and/or light snacks as this project will assuredly extend beyond the noon hour.
(13) Scouts should refer any questions to their Patrol Leaders first, but any lingering questions or parental inquiries may be directed to ASM Parker at 818-970-9324.
This is a very important service project and we will need a strong turnout to get it completed in a timely and satisfactory manner.
Tom Parker, ASM
