Scouting for Food

Scouting For Food 2017!
By Scoutmaster Michael Brown

On February 18th and 25th, Troop 26 participated in the two stages of the annual “Scouting for Food” event this year and collected 1257 lbs!

On Saturday, February 18th, we met at St. Mark’s in full Class A uniform and the day started with donuts, orange juice, pan dulce and stuffing collection bags with flyers. After dividing into 6 teams and being assigned to 6 different sections of the assigned area, we distributed collection bags in an area that ranged from around Bishop Diego High School to San Roque Road, and between Foothill Road and State Street with a request to our neighbors to fill the bags with can goods for collection on the following Saturday. The day started at 8 and finished by 11 am! Yes, we were drizzled on, but the day ended successfully!

On Saturday, February 25th, we met at St. Mark’s at 8:30 am (and ate more donuts and pan dulce) in full uniform for the 2nd phase of the Scouting for Food project. We had wonderful weather! We were able to divide into 6 teams again and go back to the same areas that we delivered the bags to pick up the donated food items. We returned these items to the church, filled our backpacks, and hiked some of the food to the Food Bank. Unfortunately a tree had fallen near the Food Bank and took out some power lines, preventing us from going any further than halfway. So we hiked back, filled Mr. Randall’s truck from the collected food in our backpacks, and ate ice cream treats that Mr. Pinner bought for us. ASPL Ben Brown and Quartermaster #2 Alex Randall accompanied Mr. Randall in his truck to the Food Bank and they unloaded the food. Again, we were finished by around 11.

Events like this show our community that Troop 26 is committed to “Helping other people at all times”. The following Scouts and adults participated in either the food bag drop-off on the 18th or the food collection on the 25th and earned 1 mile credit and 3 hrs service credit for each day they participated (those in bold participated in both days and earned an extra 25 points for their patrols!):

Scoutmaster Minute

Onward and Upward It’s a pleasure to serve as the new T26 Scoutmaster. I follow great SMs who made Troop 26 masters of the outdoors, and it is humbling. Thank
