Trail Maintenance Service Project:By Ben Zavallos

Trail Maintenance Service Project

On October 1st, Troop 26 participated in a Service Project up on San Marcos Pass. The task that our troop participated in was Trail Maintenance. Here in Santa Barbara, the natural world that we have the opportunity to explore is incomparable to many other surrounding cities, even states.

In Scouting, the Outdoor Code is one of the most important oaths that we all learn about. Because Troop 26 participates in so many activities and outings outdoors, learning and comprehending the Outdoor Code is so key to understanding the resources that we have been given.

For this particular service project, the attendance from the Troop was high, and the positive impact that we made was substantial to say the least. To give a brief summary of the day, the Troop hiked along the trail by San Marcos Pass, and cleared out all of the brush, and other debris that was in the way. There are various reasons for this task. Having an excess of brush around trails leaves significant amounts of fuel for any forest fires that could arise. Also, for the aesthetic appeal, the cleaner the trail, the better.

There were some areas of the trail that required some more heavy duty work from the Scouts. Large branches hung down obstructing certain parts of the trail, and the scouts were there to cut them down.

After the successful day of service, all those that participated got to have a much deserved meal of hotdogs, chips, and salsa. It is so important to keep our trails and wilderness clean, and orderly. As the outdoor code says, be Clean, Careful, Considerate, and Conservation-minded!

Onward and Upward It’s a pleasure to serve as the new T26 Scoutmaster. I follow great SMs who made Troop 26 masters of the outdoors, and it is humbling. Thank
